Writes
a chap: “Frequently you hear people say they are afraid they are,
losing-their-mind,
my question is: Why do they think they
found one to begin with? P.S. This
inquiry was not originally as sarcastic as it may now sound on paper.
Yours
Sincerely,” etc.
Thoughts
come and go – but consciousness is forever.
Then
asks another fellow: “But what good does framing matters thusly do
for
an ordinary person? If on the sea floor is written extraordinary information,
how
is a land resident with sight appropriate ever to access same & benefit
thereby?
The
endless waves and turbulence of thoughts would have to cease
for
a man to ever see the permanence of consciousness underlying them.”
Man’s
singular and defining feature is
consciousness,
yet it is the only activity
in
which a man can be involved without being conscious of it; a man cannot
run, fight, eat, be angry, fearful, sad or anything else men normally do
without him being
aware
of what he is doing – but his consciousness operates
totally beyond his control, desire, scripting and awareness;
if
he is asked about this, a man will pause, cut his eyes upward for a moment,
then
reply: “Certainly I am aware of my consciousness, and am responsible therefor
– who else?!” --
and yet no one knows what they are
going to say or think next,
and
no one can face then admit this inarguable fact.
You
may as well point out to a dead man who imagines he is alive, that he is
dead,
or
a slug that he’s slimy.
One
jazz fan reflected that allowing consciousness to be taken over by thoughts
is
like: “Ugh! – giving-the-bass-player-some.”
Useful
City Minutiae.
The
older the neighborhood – the more seriously are taken its institutions.
(Don’t
even THINK about thinking about this pertinent your thinking!)
But
still (clearly relevant thereto) a man asks:
“How
long do you have to be dead to qualify as being old among the deceased?”
(And
again: Don’t even THINK about thinking about how this might apply to
the
relationship between thoughts and consciousness.)
Progeny
Update.
Not
only do words speak – but always their children as well.
(Allegedly
there was once a secret band of men dedicated to making that symbolic inner
journey in consciousness from the natural here
to the extraordinary there,
who
amongst themselves, referred to their activity by the name:
Is
There No END To This?! [Which
outsiders couldn’t determine was intended sardonically or not.])
An
ordinary man’s conscious life is like being part of a six billion person
tug-of-war
cum fishnet;
the
unconventional situation in the certain man’s head is that his consciousness
becomes like a solitary, slippery eel-rope tied to nothing.
One
music promoter featured his self as often as possible.
(“If I don’t remember to – who will?!” – noted
this agent of consciousness.)
Conversation.
“Nothing
makes me feel quite as good as drugs and alcohol.”
“And smart, too!”
“Yeah.
I bet you that all the world’s great thinkers were at least closet drinkers.”
“For sure.”
“They
had to be.”
“Man! – it’s really neat knowing you.”
“Same
here.”
“I’d rather just sit and talk with you more than most anything else in
life.”
“Me
too.”
“Wanna go have a drink?”
“Sure.”
Fact:
There is nothing in human existence to equal The
Inner Partnership.
One
man says the way consciousness normally operates
(employing
only the thoughts that automatically come to it)
strikes
him as being like a radio talk show that consist solely of
endless
commercials, PSA’s
and promos for
the show –
with
the promised program itself never actually appearing.
(“God! but that nails it!” gasps someone tuned in.)
Looking
over his medical history, the doctors appeared surprised he was still alive
– which moved the man to wonder how his cells felt about it
–
and
caused him a mite of disappointment again that they can’t speak
(well, the ones
of instant interest).
Dialogue.
“What
is more comical than hearing deposed royalty explain their self?!”
“Hearing replaced consciousness do so (if
it could).”
A
pianist suggested to a drummer:
“If
you really want to see into the connection between emotions and intellect,
examine
the fact that nothing engenders hatred like religion
(which
in all its varieties professes love to be its core),
not
politics, culture, race, or nationalism – religion.
Without
cynicism, ponder this fact.”
Residential
Floor Plans & Related Activities.
The
kitchen – the bathroom: fill ‘er up – clean
‘er out;
thoughts
– consciousness: same deal (for the few).
All
communiqués from one
man are a trick.
(“Does his name begin with, C?”)
The
promotion of self (for those lacking one) can prove quite frustrating.
Puzzled
a guy: “What are the odds of turning on the radio and they be playing
one
of your favorite songs?” – and his consciousness suddenly reacted:
“Hey,
don’t look at me! – how’d I know anything about something like
that!”
(And
coltrane added: “I don’t take no lift that has monk at the lever.”)
One
way to discern that someone is not enlightened is that they believe
their
method of achieving same is in some way superior to others claiming similarly.
(“By the by pa pa: why would a real deal man be interested in whether someone
was enlightened or not?”
“He
wouldn’t.”)
One
radio devotee opines that ordinary thought is to consciousness
as
public service announcements are to entertainment.
And
now (pertinent to the allegory of an inner journey on the metaphysical
Orient Express)
the
tenor player presents our: Joke For
The Day.
“No
one actually knows in advance how to get from Paris
to Istanbul
–
all
you know for certain is that you are there when you get there; only afterwards
can
you mentally backtrack and make potentially helpful observations thereabout.”
(“That wasn’t
very funny.”
“I’m hip.”)
