As
a first example of his mental prowess,
a
kid handed his old man a paper on which he’d written:
“The
paths of fame and power lead only to the grave” --
the
elder read it --
looked away --
then read it aloud:
“The
paths of fame and power lead only to the grave” --
the
lad beamed as his father scowled and said:
“So
this is it?! --
the fruits of your insight?!:
‘The
paths of fame and power lead only to the grave””
he
looked at the smiling boy and said: “Well, you may never be a sage or philosopher,
but at least you can obviously become.....” and here his speech ceased
as
he began to gag and heave.
(He
later told the lad this was just a bit of theatrics --
thirty years
later.)
‘Tis
often said: “The first blow is the hardest,” but ‘tis never asked: “On
whom?” --
the
reason being that the current laws on life’s books do not allow questions
that
could have more than one answer.

‘Cause it strikes me how uncivil it would be to do such a thing --
yet also what a criminal waste of perfectly good words.”)

yet at the time I say it --
I never remember to include it.
Funny, huh?!”)
