THE COMMON LANGUAGE

One world is dominated by conscious creatures who, though they speak in
diverse vocal idioms, have a common language of which they are unaware;
all they grasp is what is audibly apparent:
that different groups of them converse in various tongues unique to them,
and incomprehensible to others  -- (no commonality there, and truth be told):
even between those speaking the same tongue,
frequently does one creature not understand what another is saying  --  hah!
not a true common language even among those OF common speech;
but despite the fact that sensual observation cries otherwise:

the creatures of that world have a common language.

As is securely documented: in every life form are anomalies,
and amongst these creatures periodically appears one who does recognize
the active existence of a common language –
a realization of no consequence to the majority,
but which proves of radical significance to him individually.

Get a clear picture in your mind of this situation:
a planet covered with creatures who have consciousness,
and the function of speech inherent thereto,
and who speak their speech in many different local codes,
making the collective audible sound of their species seem as splintered,
and UN common as can be;
yet beneath this world wide, aggregate perception breathes a shared language  --
just as real as are their physical similarities.

These conscious, verbal creatures recognize common instinctive traits
in the other sentient life forms around them,
and even make note of such in themselves  --  but not totally so:
they see their consciousness and speech as exceptions,
and the extreme, species wide diversity readily observable therein
seems to leave no doubt as to the veracity of this view,
(but keep fine tuning your mental grasp of this entire scene).

There is always at least one mutant who unmistakably recognizes
an unspoken, common language in omnipresent operation among the creatures;
it is not a theory, nor his imagination, but a clear reality –
as obvious and undeniable as the dirt beneath his feet, and the air above.
Simultaneously upon discovering the language’s existence,
the anomaly realizes that not one among the creatures (including him,
up until that very instant) is aware of its presence and power in their lives,
individually and collectively,
(this may strain credibility, but after all: it IS a story [though in this case a true one]).

An ongoing topic of talk with the creatures was the matter of misunderstanding,
and the conflicts it causes;
vocal debates ran non stop on this planet,
the air constantly filled with the expression of opposing verbal views on
every subject for which the creatures had a name,
with a parallel profession for the need to eradicate conflict and arrive at a consensus
in the realm of consciousness (which is for practical purposes):
the world of speech and ideas;
and though this unity is never achieved, and nothing changes,
the creatures seem not to notice the lack of progress,
and their vocalization in this regard is in no wise diminished.

So: a planet populated by a species of creatures who have consciousness,
who have thoughts, and whose mouths make sounds they say are manifestations
OF their consciousness and thinking –
and everyone one of them saying different things, expressing sundry thoughts,
and in many different tongues  –
and yet behind, beneath, permeating it all is a common language,
realized by only an anomaly among the billions of the species.
And something else the mutant recognizes is that his own, pre-realization-consciousness still speaks the common language,
and continues to be ignorant thereof;
he is only aware of the language’s existence when
his consciousness is not dealing in it:
he is only conscious of his species’, secret common language when his own
new, individual form of consciousness is not thinking or talking IN the common one –
a condition with which he finds great favor, and indeed,
incomparably preferable to his old one (his species’ normal one).

Keeping his consciousness in the new state he has uncovered
(by discovering his kind’s common language) becomes the focal point of his inner life, (apparently a collateral feature of his mutation),
and for years this is an endless, relentless struggle,
with failure having a thousand verbally identifiable mothers -- yet right before his mind, the reason attendant to his lack of permanent success stands:
his consciousness back trafficking in his species’  --  common language.
The mutant cannot sustain the consciousness he prefers
when his consciousness is speaking/thinking in the language normal to his kind.

When you are thinking or talking about anything that other human beings are talking/writing about  --   your consciousness might as well be asleep in bed,
in the grip of uncontrollable dreams;
the ancient voiced desire by a few to: awaken from some sort of dream,
is consciousness wanting to be in control of itself,
and consciousness can exert no control over itself
when it is speaking in man’s unrealized, common language;
here, there are no ifs, ands, or buts  --
just perhaps, the only true & absolute example of: either/or  --
your consciousness is either dealing in man’s common language, or it is not  --
with no in between places, no areas of grey,
any more than there be any doubt between being alive or being dead.

No matter who you are, if at any moment your consciousness/thoughts/speech is about anything other men’s consciousness/thoughts and speech is about  --
you are dead-on, one of them and nothing more;

you cannot internally do chicken clucks and not be a chicken.

To see what is going on for yourself  --
abandon man’s common language of consciousness  --
doing that will lead you there.

J

There is but one type of language profitable for the certain man: language that illuminates the essence of language.
