TWO CONCONSCIOUSNESSES: PART TWO
_________________________________
(Cont. from 10/19/01)
The
model of consciousness presently offered distinguishes itself from the
usual one employed by those who seek an outside-the-herd view of life in
that the latter
pictures
man's ordinary consciousness as being flawed, asleep, confused,
and
in need of repair, awakening and enlightenment,
where
as the instant one paints quite a different neural landscape:
one
in which there are two separate consciousnesses:
one
being man's primary consciousness;
the
one everyone is equipped with;
the
one that answers directly to survival instincts;
the
one that runs your everyday affairs and is the source of your vocal personality
and
sense of having a self, an "I",
and
it is the consciousness that men normally believe is in need of fixing.
In
the routine world, the psychologically inclined diagnose man's consciousness
as
having been damaged by social mishandling and needs, through therapy,
to
be rehabilitated,
while
the religiously given say that man's consciousness
(commonly
labeled spirit, or soul) suffered a self inflicted curse from which
it
now requires redemption,
and
the other main group who shows interest in the matter
(philosophers
and mystics) have generally settled on describing
man's
ordinary consciousness simply as not being fully awake and employed,
but
that through certain unorthodox efforts
can
be aroused to a more expansive state of awareness & insight.
These
and all other common models are based on there being but
one
consciousness in a man,
and
thus if a man is disturbed by his -- the proper course of action
is to try to change it;
psychiatric
analysis & counseling:
religious
instruction & conversion;
mediation
& the various mystical disciplines,
but
this primary consciousness
(taken
by the above to be the only consciousness) -- cannot be altered;
it
is not broken, thus cannot be repaired;
it
is not asleep, thus cannot be awaken;
is
not captive, thus cannot be freed, and above all:
it
is in no way ignorant and thus cannot be enlightened,
the
everyday consciousness you wake up with each morning
knows
exactly what is going on,
if
it did not, you would have killed yourself by now via accident.
This
consciousness, being under the direct control of your instinct to survive,
knows
what to eat and drink; what to approach and what to avoid;
recognizes
which words & knowledge are beneficial to survival
and
which are mere noise.
This
primary consciousness has one interest: keeping you alive,
but
has no interest in explaining life.
This
consciousness is committed --
thoroughly
committed to your survival,
while
the other consciousness has no commitment --
that,
to the few-with-the-hunger,
is its entire attraction.
No
matter what they call it, (enlightenment, awakening, liberation),
what
the few seek is something that is already there in their brain:
the
other consciousness, and trying to tinker with or bulldoze
the
primary one is an irrelevant and unconnected activity
(though
granted, for quite a time it seems otherwise, and in truth:
for
those born-with-the-aim,
the
relentless, singular pursuit of almost
any
unorthodox inner activity can eventually get you there,
but
the different approach possible via this new limning of the internal situation
can
save significant time and ultimately, less than maximally efficient effort).
Why
try to change Thing A
if, (firstly): It cannot be changed,
(and
nextly): What you want to change it to
already exists in you.
Your,
I-wake-up-with-it-everyday,
primary consciousness
is
completely committed to activities for which it is inalterably programmed
--
forget
about it --
it
doesn't need you -- it is you, in the most radical sense;
if
you are truly one of the few to-this-born
what
you really seek & what will satisfy your hunger is all
there
in the other consciousness,
its
primo characteristic is that it is -- uncommitted
to anything;
non-committed-consciousness
is
precisely what you yearn for;
consciousness
with no inherent agenda;
one
not limited to pre arranged programming,
and
all of that is exactly what the other consciousness is.
Every
verbal attempt to say what "being awake, or enlightened"
might
be in essence, describes the above, but not so directly;
a
more enlightened man (or mind) would be one which could look at anything
-- fresh; with no built-in opinions, prejudices,
or
meaningless preferences;
a
consciousness that is not always talking to itself about what it sees;
not
constantly accepting & rejecting;
not
continually arguing with life as it, in its greatest refinement,
reveals
itself, measures itself, and plots its own existence -- through man.
This
other
consciousness is there in everyone,
but
un noted or used by hardly anyone in any meaningful manner,
but
whenever someone attempts to "still-the-mind" -- or,
"self-remember"
-- or
"control-attention"
by mediation, prayer, or chanting,
they
are unwittingly trying to bring the other consciousness center stage
to
replace their primary consciousness,
while
toiling under the assumption that they are attempting to bring on
profitable
alterations to the inalterable primary one.
Why
pay retail;
why
not cut out the middle man;
why
give your attention to peter
when
it is paul you are actually wooing?!
Instead
of struggling to stop thought; to calm and clear your present consciousness,
just
make an effortless shift in the area in your cerebral cortex where your
consciousness is at this moment, and right there is what you have been
looking for;
just
shift -- and it does not matter in what direction,
for
any shift will take you out of primary consciousness to the other one,
since
those two are all the consciousness that there is.
The
right man could ultimately arrive at the-understanding
by
doing almost anything, (trying to push a mountain over;
attempting
to think of the absolute largest number, or trying not to have thoughts),
but
why not be as efficient as possible.
For some reason,
the
people who have pursued this special-interest throughout the annals
of man
have
not seen their inner situation & their challenge in the observably
valid terms today employed;
for
some
reason life has always caused these few people to think
of
their objective as being to change
their ordinary consciousness
into
another-kind-of
consciousness
when
the other-kind-of-consciousness
is sitting right there next to the one
they struggle with.
Rather
than trying to topple Everest, or harness the wind,
just
take an effortless step sideways in your head and the same goal is reached.
Nothing
can stop a dedicated man from struggling needlessly,
but
neither can anything cause a man who
realizes
the two consciousnesses
to
any longer needlessly struggle.
Swap
your sweaty flamenco for a more refined,
one-step-to-the-side.
Ole!
