ANOTHER STORY FROM ANOTHER WORLD
___________________________________
In
one galaxy, there is a man who owns a theatre
and
has no control over the movies shown;
he
holds clear deed to the property;
owes
no one for the equipment;
has
his own taste in film -- and yet:
he
does not control the movies that are played there;
they
are determined by The Mob.
No
one knows precisely who The Mob is,
at
least no one publicly admits so:
this
is difficult to accept
for
how can they be forcing the theatre owner to run
what
they select if he does not have enough contact with
one
of them sufficient for him to form some notion of exactly
what
kind of figures make up The Mob.
It
beleaguers belief --
yet
the theatre owner (and all like him) insist it be so:
that
he is forced -- day & night --
to
run movies that he does not select;
but
this situation, (as sorry as may already seem),
is
not the worst of it,
for
with this theatre owner -- film
is the focal point of his life.
Notwithstanding
the essential physical needs,
he
finds film the most significant activity in which
men
can involve themselves;
as
is not uncommon, he believes that features of man’s culture
can
deserve supremacy over all in life but the
physical
necessities, and in his case -- movies.
He
thinks that movies have the power to inspire & instruct,
and
do have a direct influence on the lives men lead,
and
the beliefs they hold;
thus
it seems such a shame that
he
has such a love-for & faith-in movies,
and
yet has no control over which ones are shown in his theatre ---
because of -- The Mob.
This
situation gives rise to troubles beyond the walls of just his theatre,
for it appears that The Mob controls what is shown in
everyone’s
screening room, so when one theatre owner makes a
negative
comment about what is running in a neighbor’s place,
the
neighbor, having no control over what is being played in his
establishment,
cannot rationally defend what is therein going on,
and
has but frustration to call on,
thus
on that planet, you find incessant sniping between
the
theatre owners;
one
criticizes what is running in a second’s house;
the
second, not being responsible for what’s on, even perhaps,
not
approving of it himself,
responds
to the criticism with a defense that is thoroughly hollow -- for
he has no real defense for what is being shown in
his
theatre, and indeed really needs none,
in
that he is not responsible for it -- The Mob is,
but
as noted: no owner admits to knowing who The Mob is,
thus
they cannot lay the responsibility where it belongs,
and
free themselves from the endless cycle of
criticism-into,
vacuous-defense-from-frustration,
and back again.
Having
no one to blame for this out of control situation --
they
blame one another,
and
in private, at certain times, most also blame themselves
for
not being able to do anything about the flicks that are shown in
the place which they then feel needs defending;
each
theatre owner thinks to himself that if he was in control of what
plays in his house, he would never select a film that
he
would later feel needed defending -- but alas:
the
situation is not like that.
Truth
is, “alas” does not normally intrude into this
particular
situation on that particular world
for
what has happened is that almost all theatre owners
pretend
to ignore what is going on,
after
all: if you cannot do anything about a situation
why
make it worse by endlessly talking about it;
all
such predicaments are made more palatable by
pretending
they do not exist -- hey :
if
movies themselves can create a pleasurable world of
make
believe -- why not those who run them?
(That
is the end of that story, but there is this curious footnote:
no
one has any knowledge of The Mob actually ever
causing anyone any harm.)
