A
father
said to a son: “To really get this adventure
moving,
not only
stop pretending to know things which you do not,
but also
stop pretending that you are dumber than you are,
for you already
know quite enough in your everyday mind to get the job done.
Never underestimate
the value of ordinary consciousness,
for that
is all that anyone has, or will ever have.
A curious
thing is that your ordinary consciousness will argue this,
and insist
that you (it speaking for you) have been in other states
of consciousness
(either self or drug induced)
which were
certainly far removed from your ordinary one --
a claim that
at first can appear difficult to refute -- and yet,
everyone
has but one state of consciousness, and whatever episodes
of increased
pleasured & heightened insight you have experienced
came out
of your ordinary state of consciousness;
tell me:
from where else could they come?
(I rhetorically
ask you this my son, on the basis that you have grown past thinking that
they have some supernatural source,
and that
this entire adventure is somehow, other worldly & metaphysical.
You can put
different foods in your body, but not new realities,
regardless
of how persuasively thoughts can dream otherwise,
but don’t
blame thought -- dreaming IS its primary talent;
blame yourself
for not remembering this.)
I doubt that
you & I would have ever undertaken this grand expedition to achieve
a
new state
of consciousness had we been convincingly told at the outset
that our
ordinary consciousness was all we would ever possess,
but it is
time for you to take this statement of reality to private heart;
to carry
it around with you, familiarly fondling it in your pocket;
to force
yourself into a direct confrontation with what it says –
in spite
of the fact that it sounds impossible.
As you know
from experience, those episodes the literature refers to as,
‘having your
moment of enlightenment’ are quite unlike your
routine state
of consciousness,
and unquestionably,
something out of the ordinary turning of physiological events in your brain
occurs which clears, or greatly diminishes the background static
usually present
in consciousness and normally accepted as a standard part thereof,
but as pleasurable,
even validating as such experiences may be,
they are
not permanent, any more than sorrow or rage becomes a permanent neural
state no matter how deeply felt, at one time they were.
No my boy,
what you are doomed to live with on a day by day basis
is your ordinary
state of consciousness,
but it is
not a, 'doom’
doom -- it is a liberating, life-giving-doom,
and in this
instance: language is up to the task,
for, ‘doom’
means both, ‘to destroy,’ and also, ‘destiny,’
and if you
do not properly comprehend ordinary consciousness --
it will destroy
your chances of ever reaching our goal,
but if you
understand that no thing has a destiny outside of what it physically
is,
this realization
will set you free from the non accomplishing dreams which now cloud your
inner world, and cause your disorientation.
Whatever may
be the actual make up of the extraordinary,
periodic
times that some men experience of, enlightenment
--
it came from
his own ordinary consciousness;
I ask you
again: from where else could it come?
A genii suddenly
flew into your head and left it there?
The gods
finally recognized your astounding value, and sent you a reward?
Out of the
entire universe, some type of mysterious, new age-old age
metaphysical
force (unknown to science) sought you out as a recipient for a trial testing
of a potentially advanced state of neural consciousness?
..............(And
son: don’t make me laugh when my mouth is full.)
No adult close
to the trunk of our family tree entertains such notions;
anything
that happens in your brain -- originated in your brain:
again: where
else?
Anything
that occurs to your consciousness was caused BY your consciousness;
by the only
one you have -- by your ordinary one.
You do have
two hemispheres to your brain,
but you do
not have two consciousnesses;
I am aware
that even I continue to use the terminology of us either being in
a sleeping
state of consciousness, or in an awake one,
but on your
own you must make the slight effort it takes to understand that in the
beginning of a new journey the first thing a map must establish is:
‘You are
here,
and over, there
is
where you want go’:
(translated):
You are presently, here
-- in a sleeping state of ordinary consciousness,
and your
goal is, over there --
some where
-- in a different, awakened state,
but this
is only necessary directional, finger-pointing to get you to take the first
step, and not a conclusive, description of how things are ---
once you
get
-- over THERE.
Wherever you
end up -- your ordinary consciousness will be with you;
whatever
it is that you now imagine will get there --
it is your
ordinary consciousness that will do it.
It is easy
to make your ordinary state of consciousness THE villain in all of this
(and with
initial, pragmatic reason)
but it is
also the only hero available in the whole affair;
your only
guide, defender, and source of wisdom.
Collective
man is arranged & programmed to think that wisdom is to be had from
sources outside of himself; from other men;
from his
culture’s rituals; from books, legends, myths,
but it is
all a mass glutinous dream that serves to hold together,
the civilized
human herd,
it however
is a confusing fog to those few individuals trying to get off
on that private,
Great
Straying From The Horde,
for what
you need to know -- to properly stray -- only you can
say;
only your
own – ordinary consciousness -- knows what you need
to be --
Un ordinary in your consciousness,
and the sad,
exciting truth is that: it does know.............and has.........for
a long time.
Your ordinary
(sleeping, if you must) consciousness,
knows what
to do to be Un asleep;
it knows,
it knows, and -- it knows;
the question
is: So why don’t we do it?
and the most
obvious response is that we are either too weak & lazy,
or else too
much the victim of life long habit -- but my lad,
there is
a third door -- and a door with a window you can see through;
and the sight
to be seen through that window can open that door,
and that
sight is: your ordinary consciousness -- out
there -- looking back
at you,
and my boy,
if THAT
don’t wake you up -- nothing will.”
All
in all, that other consciousness, dreamed of by so many,
is
closer to your ordinary state than it is a fantastic one.
The father
stood, to leave, and in parting said:
“If you are
alert enough to really be a part of me,
you will
now never again underestimate the value of your ordinary consciousness,
for I have
told you truly -- it is all you have or will ever have;
you believe
that you are an exception because you have ME --
-- but where do you think I
came
from?!”
