August 7, 2001.

As their plane waited for take off, the father looked at the wings,
and while understanding the eventual need for de-limning
to get fully air borne,
he considered their present position, (still on the ground),
and decided to fly yet a few more thoughts, (in the form of words), toward the son’s head, which was, (as always), seated beside him.

“There is another feature of this extraordinary flight we are on
that you should now be able to appreciate & profit from pursuing:
the fact that there are clearly two directions involved in this thing
called, ‘Waking-from-the-dream’:
the first direction is awakening from illusions you have had about
the world outside of you;
about other people; about the collective affairs of man;
the second direction is awakening from the dreams you have
about yourself.

So: there is enlightenment regarding the external world,
and enlightenment concerning the internal world;
the latter is seldom achieved  --  and it is the one with the real jackpot.”

The engines were started.
”This flight plan is natural in that everyone’s initial complaints with life , and their perception of the forces that hinder them is focused on
the world outside of them;
from youth on, men’s consciousness perceives their problems to be
due to unfavorable, external conditions, primarily of the mortal variety:
'Billy won’t give me his bicycle';
'The coach singles me out for abuse,'
into: 'I didn’t get a raise because the boss dislikes me & is an idiot.'

In later years, (assuming a person becomes more sophisticated,
in the ordinary sense),
they will complain on a more cosmopolitan, if not, international basis;
they will whine about secret banking conspiracies manipulating the stock market to always keep the average investor like himself
from ever sharing in the really BIG profits,
and they will rail about their government’s, or their religion’s, or their
culture’s mores interfering with their free pursuit of happiness,
(or else: their wife, their neighbors, their in laws, their own family,
or the foreigners overrunning & ruining our previously fine set-up, etc.)

Comparably you can see that creatures without consciousness
are naturally programmed to look for danger only outside themselves;
the only threats about which they can take any defensive action
come from external conditions, so it is about the world alone that they,
and man, physically, need be enlightened.

But man does have a thought based consciousness,
and thus his awareness of external conditions and possible dangers
is not confined to matters actually physical,
nor his reactions to mere animal instinct;
his thoughts speak to him with their analysations of extrinsic circumstances, and with predictions of potential threats & enemies,
and when the threats do not become materially manifest,
they become absorbed into his daydream repertoire.

Nothing herein is amiss, nor does it cause mental illness;
it is all an integrated part of collective man’s, reality-of-consciousness,
and results in the species wide phenomenon of everyone --
--  even when not in physical danger --
being filled with thoughts that speak of danger,
danger of a type that can assault a man without physical contact:
(your broker’s playing with your account;
the opposing political party is passing legislation
unfavorable to your interests, [and for the less secular]:
demonic forces are destroying the world.)”

The engines began to rev up.
“All in all, ordinary men, (those adjudged sane by their peers),
see the source of all singularly human problems as residing in
conditions outside of the man experiencing them,
and those few, born with that obscure hunger that prevents them from ever being satisfied with the explanations of: what-is-wrong-with-life,
(such as the above), which satisfy everyone else,
should they make any progress in their extracurricular quest,
it is initially in that direction, (to wit):
if a man begins to awaken a bit & see the world outside of him,
outside of the overall imposed & generally accepted confines
of collective-man’s consciousness of reality,
he starts to realize that conditions outside of him are not the cause of
his unique agitation, and that not even the most fantastic changes
out there would bring about the peace he seeks --  in here.

Simply put, my boy:
the external world is irrelevant to our flight.
Nothing ever said, thought or done out there
has anything to do-with, or any affect-on
You waking-up; seeing-the-light; putting-it-all-together and taking off.

So a man, (let us for convenience call him): ‘somewhat-awake’
is a man who is no longer tied, (in the ordinary way),
to the ordinary, non-physical reality outside of him;
he can still be bruised by a hurled rock, but not by an insult;
cold, rainy weather might cause him to feel, blue,
but not the election victory of the Labor Party.

The discernible, first stage of a man’s emergence from the captivity
of routine, dull consciousness is his realization that the reality constructed-by & totally dependent-on  --  man’s thoughts
is something entirely apart from the plain old, mundane physical world
in which we all live, and bump into.
A man then is no longer constantly infuriated with the stupidity (or evil)
of other men;
mentally, he ceases to wrestle with them and their thoughts,
brought on by his direct realization that other human beings,
both physically AND mentally,
are simply a natural part of his environment, and deserve no more
concern or attention than does the weather, or the fauna & flora.
No one, or no thing outside of you can hinder your awakening --
that’s it  --   lock the barn & burn your overalls.”

The turbines were now whirling like banshees at a dervish convention.
”Like every other aspect of the, waking-up-thing,
your understanding of this is not a permanent, one shot affair:
one day --  suddenly you realize what I am talking about,
then you spend the rest of your life refining it; expanding it;
growing into it until it is, (for all intents), an inseparable part of you.
The, sudden part is that experience commonly referred to as,
‘Your moment of Enlightenment,’ but in all aspects of this extraordinary adventure, you have such a moment regarding many things,
but that one, eye-opening, explains-everything moment
does not the rest of your life make;
waking up is an endless process --  unless YOU cause it to stop,
and that is what I am getting to today.

Many people’s efforts cease at this point:
they are so relieved by no longer feeling that they are in conflict with life, and everything seems so much more natural & agreeable now that
they have this extraordinary new understanding of how things really stand in a man’s relationship to the external world,
that many, in essence --  abandon the adventure.
It is not much surprising --  but all too human.
There are a scant few however, who -- ebbing-&-flowing -- try to continue, (at least in a manner of speaking).

Now that they are no longer so frantically,  if not, fanatically involved
with, ‘World affairs --   out there!’ –
they do turn more attention to their own personal inner world,
(which is easier to do once you are not so entangled with
the outer one).
Some will at least commence a journey that is aimed,
(knowingly or not), at seeing through the illusions they have
regarding the mental world inside of them,
just as they did with the physical world outside of them.
This is The Supreme Adventure, compared to which,
the first stage of discovery is mere kindergarten,
for now a man is on the track of --  not the dreams that had him so long confused about other men & the external world,
but the mechanics responsible for his dreams.
The difference, me lad, between reading an article on flying,
and studying the brain scans of Wilbur & Orville.”
The engines now sounded like Rumi on speed.
“But few of the few who even start on this second level path ever
get beyond a step or two --  it is certainly not for the squeamish,
but it alone is the yellow brick layout that reaches all the way to
Oz-ville.

Gawd, but it is tricky;
like trying to hold an eel with greased hands;
like trying to grab your own hand;
like attempting to look into your own ear;
like trying to hear what your eyes have to say.

Some say it is not possible                      --                     no they don’t;
those who don’t get into it far enough to suspect what it is about,
never say anything about it --
'cause they don’t know anything about it;
only those deep enough into it to sense where it may be headed
would have the moxie to opine that it might not be ultimately possible -but you’d never hear that from them
since they don’t talk about what they’re doing any way.

No, oh son of  yours & mine,
no man is truly awake, enlightened & liberated who has not gone on past becoming hip to what the physical & mortal
external world is all about, and moved on to the exclusive investigation of his mortal, internal one,
and it is no, psychological self-study;
(it is not seeking to uncover the reason you,
‘So dislike The Labor Party,’
but is rather to beat from the bushes, the Dr. Livingston in man’s brain
that insists to him that he has any political interests);
nor is it, spiritual self-reflection, nor, mystical self-meditation,
it is something else entirely:
it is an investigation the likes of which is unknown & indescribable to
ordinary men.

As you begin awakening in the second direction
you go from believing that all of your problems were caused by
external conditions to believing they are due to your internal ones,
but what keeps you from opening your mental eyes as wide,
and seeing as clearly as is humanly possible
is not problems in your internal world,
but rather your not understanding that world.

The routine collective consciousness of men will not allow them to hear even slight descriptions of what I am referring to:
making the leap from feeling that you are the problem,
to knowing that there IS no problem,
(other than your ignornace of how things are in you).

The consciousness natural to ordinary men treats just the mention of this second direction and its ultaime aim, as anathema;
’tis though man’s consciousness is SELF conscious --
embarrassed at being looked at.”  (The elder elbowed the younger
smartly in the ribs and added): “It's got to be either that,
or else it is afraid of being looked at..............either way:
                 a high curiosity  -- wouldn’t you say.”

The plane began to tremble as though something might be imminent.
“A man who expresses no complaints with the world
may have achieved awakening in the first direction,
but only one who has accomplished the second awakening
has no complaints about himself.”
The craft began to bounce up & down as though it were about to.
“People living in a dream stay torqued off at everybody;
those with one eye open are upset just with themselves,
but those with all eyes up & about…….well --
who the hell KNOWS what ticks them off.
(Damn, their smug silence!)”
   Would you like a drink; fasten your belt;
   put your glasses between your knees.
“Served to you straight lad, no mixer:
when you have awakened in the first direction,
you no longer think-about, talk-about, or concern-yourself-with  –
--  things outside of you;

if you awaken in the second direction
you no longer think-about, talk-about, or have any real interest in
Bugs Bunny,” and --  Swoosh!  --  they were  off the ground & soaring.
