June
28, 2001.
As
they lay on the patio tweaking their moon tans,
the
father said to the son:
”It
sure can get crowded with both of us struggling to be here
at
the same time, inside this one man’s brain” --
No! Hold it!
That’s
not what he said. Now, come on -- do it right.
“From
a defensible, technical view you could say that
‘Waking
up’ consists of two distinct parts:
first
there are those extraordinary transient states some people experience in
which your brain suddenly operates outside its norm,
and
you instantly see everything as it really is, and all questions are vanquished,
(commonly called, ‘the moment-of-enlightenment'),
and
the other part is the gradual, more permanent shift in
your
everyday thinking about life,
a
result of relentless efforts to achieve the experience."
The
elder propped up on an elbow, leaned over to the lad,
and
conspiratorially whispered:
“What
I am going to tell you is the sort of thing
that the Supreme Masters of the Galaxy Nebulosi absolutely do not want
any human to know about” -- Hey,
he didn’t say that!
You’re
doing it again; now, stop it!
“Almost
all of the writings regarding, Waking Up
&
Enlightenment
are
devoted to the experience, which is to be expected in that creatures, men,
men’s brains in particular,
will
not take any action unless there is
an
identifiable goal to be experienced:
you
do not seek food unless you want to have the
real
time experience of consuming it,
and
men would not & could not even begin to seek the goal of,
Waking
up, (experiencing a different state of
consciousness),
unless
it had an identifiable name, (such as: ‘Waking
up’),
and
was believed to be a distinct, all-inclusive, ‘experience,’
not
unlike that of slaking thirst, or the climactic release of sex.
Thus,
no matter what method, school, or teaching he initially follows,
every
person who undertakes to, ‘wake up’
has in mind the goal to be the experience he has read about in stories
wherein
a seeker suddenly -- ‘Wakes up’
--
and
the inexperienced & unknowing assume this will be the end of it,
(and
there is little in the literature contradicting the notion).
I
have no scientific explanation of what the experience
is,
for
no one really understands what it is,
(I
have some pretty good suspicions regarding temporary suspensions
of
certain of the brain’s operations necessary for our
normal
state of, ‘consciousness’ --
but
I will not speak of them specifically,
and
leave further study of the matter to you),
but
what I will say is that when your brain undergoes this, experience
it
is as though your head, your mind, your consciousness,
has
been suddenly, cleaned-out-of:
noise, smoke & clutter,
of
whose existence you were unaware,
in
that they are the very foundations of your ordinary state of mind.
When
experiencing, ‘The Experience’
you
do not: see-God; fly-through-the-air; talk-to-the-dead,
or
anything remotely of the like -- indeed, most to the contrary:
what
you see are the same old things all around you
that
you always see, -- except that you
see,
experience & comprehend them without the
filtering
& running analysis of
them
that
is normally carried on by certain of the brain's operations which constitute
your usual consciousness of them.
For
a man who-knows-through-experience
to
say more about,
the
experience
is
to do anyone who listens to him, a shameful disservice.
Suffice
it to note that the experience of, Waking
Up,
or,
Achieving
Enlightenment
temporarily
frees a man’s brain of certain of its normal operations
that
are a natural part of, and indeed the very foundations of
his
everyday state of consciousness.
It
-- in an instant
-- simply proves
to you, indisputably –
what
you had always non verbally assumed to be so,
since
you first heard of the idea of, Waking up,
(even
though you could not tell yourself beforehand
what
this be that you would see --
but
when it happens, and you see -- via the experience –
you
cannot even tell yourself then
what it is;
for
it is mostly -- nothing;
you
just see things as they are with -- nothing else.
Not
everyone who seems born with an interest in this affair
has,
‘The Experience,’ but as I said, (behind the Supreme Council’s back, I’m
going to tell you something that” --
Hey, watch it!
”(Sorry),
but
the experience is not all there is to this extraordinary activity;
the
experience does not technically, ‘teach you anything’,
(other
perhaps, than the fact that any teaching simply interferes with
‘waking
up’ & the direct experience of things -- but
hell boy!
I’ve
already told you that, what -- a thousand times already?!).
So
there is no, Secret Knowledge
that is only available to those who have had the transient experience(s)
of, ‘Being fully awake & clear headed’;
even
if you have the experience -- it is only the beginning,
(unless
you choke on it..…..then obviously it is your end),
it
is the beginning of a life long refinement & stabilization of the,
clarity-of-sight
you experience while in,
the
experience,
but
this, refinement-of-sight-&-understanding
can
be pursued
without
you having had such an experience;
the
mere fact that you are interested in the goal of this sort of activity
is
ample evidence of your brain being naturally wired for
the
potential of realizing it.
I
say to you, my one & only progeny,
that
the, experience
is not the alpha & omega of this adventure,
and
that anything you ever gain -- including the experience
--
can
only be the result of your relentless efforts to achieve it,
and
that even if you do have the experience,
you
must still engage in unrelenting mental effort the rest of your life
so
as to turn that which is an unpredictable, transient affair into
an
integral part of your minute-by-minute,
everyday
consciousness of life and yourself,
(your,
‘self’ being whatever your brain functions in charge of this
concept says that you are………and, taking this seriously
is
what, ‘being asleep’ is all about in the first place.”)
The
elder shifted about to get a better angle
between
his face and the sky, then spoke again:
“I
hope that you & everyone else interested in this matter
have
the
experience -- for it
is certainly singular,
but
it is just an -- experience
--
something
that just occurs in a few-of-the-few;
it
cannot be brought on at will, and it is not a permanent state,
and
those who tell others otherwise --
do
not know what they are talking about.
All
that a man, hungry-to-awaken can do
on a continual,
and
continually profitable
basis is struggle to
wake up;
struggle
to have
the, waking-up-experience,
and
whether he ever does or not is irrelevant to him gradually
developing
his own awakened view of life.
It
is understandable that people such as us want to have, the
experience as soon as they hear of it,
and
having that as your goal presents no problem;
but
the extraordinary & strictly individual ability to see life without
the distorting interference of your brain’s normal verbal analyzation thereof
comes from, (1): being born with the interest to do this,
and,
(2): dedicated, constant effort not
to let what goes on in your
mind be limited-to, & totally controlled-by the thoughts that automatically
appear there, and present themselves as being what,
you
think. This is being asleep, from top to bottom.”
The
father rolled over on his physical back, stretched, and
rolled
on otherwise:
“And
so we find ourselves back again to what I have so oft said to you:
do
not let your thoughts trail after anyone else’s, (pro or con);
most
efficient is not to even encounter them in the first place,
and
do not accept what your brain normally raises up & presents as, your
--
thinking
to
be anything other than noise, (a kind of ever present,
background
radiation to the big bang origins of its consciousness).”
Now
the old man sat upright, and leaned over closer to where his younger part
lay, and, sotto-voced:
“If
we were alone in the universe,
and
I was sure that those, you-know-who’s weren't listening in,
I’d
put the whole shebang to you colloquially, and say that:
Just
‘tween me & you, (speaking jocosely & metaphorically),
everybody
is slap-full of shit -- including me & you,
and
that nobody knows anything,
and
the more that you say you do -- the stupider you get.
So
-- simply put, dear son of mine:
you’re
an idiot to listen to anything that anybody says about anything, (anything
you can’t put your hands on, that is).
No
man’s brain -- including your own --
is
naturally structured to be conscious of life outside of its own
ceaseless
interpretations thereof,
for
these interpretations are
its consciousness of life,
(this
is what makes those momentary, experiences-of-freedom
there from so astounding & noteworthy);
man’s
brain is simply not programmed-to-produce
nor
deal with real time thoughts about its own operations,
(again,
the singularity of the, experience),
but
for some reason a few people have brains with a
built-in
anomalous possibility;
an
interest-in, and potential-talent-for:
their
brain gaining some comprehension of its own operations,
and
as un-historically-mystical as this may sound,
I
have, right here tonight, just described to you in excruciating –
(naw,
it’s really -- scrumptious & delectable)
-- detail,
the
reality that long ago drove a few people’s brains to experience,
and
then try to talk about ,
(by
inventing the terms: ‘being awake, and, being asleep’),
what
it is for the brain to: be
awake
-- or, be
asleep.”
The
father stood up to leave, and the son mused:
“It is all
so simple when I listen only to him.”
J
..."I
also wonder if he realizes what a comfort & help it is just knowing
that there is somebody out there
who
knows what it is that I want
to know."
..."How
did the words, 'out there' get in here?!"
