Since it was the weekend, the father & son took a twenty minute break,
and as they sat relaxing the elder said:
“Let’s play a game: I’ll say some things,
and you try to figure out what I’m talking about.

One man had two sons:
one was always yackin’ & bouncin’ around,  and the other always bitchin’ about the yackin’ & bouncin’ around.

The man always wanted only ONE son, but thought he had two.

                                               He had only one.

In a coliseum, each day did one slave do battle,
wherein he was mauled & manhandled by beasts,
but was never so injured that he did not the next day return.

Even though unable to defeat his attackers,
he yet discovered a winning ploy:
if he would vigilantly watch the portal through which they entered –
                                  --  they would fail to show.

Wanting to be enlightened is a hunger to understand a tree,
which men generally attempt by examining limbs and leaves they find - --  of which there are plenty;
but what you should study is the tree itself  --   which few do --
and why?  --   because the tree IS the thing seeking enlightenment.

Being asleep is listening too much to what your thoughts say that
you WANT to do --
...but they never really  --  get down to it -
...you’re constantly left just sort of dangling -
...always just on the verge of doing something….always, always, always just ready to do something - but never quite doing it.

(Your body always has something it would like to do --
but peripatetic dozers are always looking for more than this.)

One man advised his family:
‘Don’t waste your time reading anything on:
“How to Awaken”  that has to have footnotes to explain its terms.

Oh yeah: and never read anything that has been translated from
one language to another……….or from one head to another.

Oh, all right:  don’t read ANYTHING about waking up --
--   not and expect it to do you any good.

Okay --  now has everybody got it?! --
 --  can we finally put this thing to rest?!’

There is a certain game, (the only game acceptable to some),
which cannot be played on anyone else’s field,

yet all men play a version of the game, and without exception,
do so on one another’s turf;

under such conditions  –  victory is not possible   ---   for ANYONE.

One man says that the greatest damage his mind inflicts is in its continual opening of,  "dangerous & forbidden boxes,”

but this is incorrect --  there are no such boxes;

the injury comes from allowing THE VOICES to make you believe that there are such things that can BE opened.

When you hear about an awakened mind --  you want one, thinking that this awakened mind is a something,
a something you do not now have that you can have,
but mind is not a something,
and by your searching for it,
you create something in your mind that does not exist.

A man who has SEEN-IT-ALL can be no one’s hero --
for there is nothing to him   --   nothing any longer -- TO HIM.

On the too-near side of this:   men dance with their shadows --
--  whose nature is quicksand;

push, push here,
                     be sucked, sucked in there.

                                                        There is no winnin'
                                                         's long's there's
                                                         anything to ya.

Do you realize my boy,
that everything  you  long for would be instantly available     --     IF
a shadow could  just keep itself out of the room where it is,

...and speaking of such things:
when it comes to  --   LISTENING TO STEREOS

          Watch the speaker rather than trailing after the music.

Okay son,  keeing in mind that I never urged you to:
get a sensible car,
stay in school, or
not put this-or-that-stuff in your body   --   quick!  -  tell us:
                                what d’ya think it is that I'm really talkin' about?”

                               asked the father as he checked his watch.
